Rivers State governor, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, over the weekend spoke of how he put God on the spot to right his wrongful preclusion from the April 2007 governorship race in Rivers State.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos, Governor Amaechi revealed that he had to embark on a seven-day fast, in the heat of the governorship crisis in Rivers State, to petition God to right the injustice meted to him by the “powers that-be, both in Abuja and Port Harcourt” who denied him the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket, despite winning the party’s primary election for that purpose.
Said he: “I challenged God to redress the injustice done to me by those powers-that-be in Abuja and Port Harcourt who believe they possess the power to determine who gets what. I challenged God to prove to them that he indeed is the God who reigns supreme in the affairs of men.”
I requested that he should do something with my case in such a manner that those who cheated me and the whole world would know that he is God,” Amaechi added.
“When God answered through the Supreme Court judgment, ordering that I be sworn in as Rivers State governor, those powers in Abuja and Port Harcourt were shocked as they had been put to shame by a superior power in heaven”, Amaechi said.
Putting his past political travail into perspective, Governor Amaechi informed that it was his pastors and he (Amaechi) who believed that justice would be done and he would be named governor of Rivers State.
Said he: “My pastors told me I will become the governor. It was only my pastors and I who believed that I will still be governor, even my supporters had lost hope that anything positive could still come out of the judicial process we were exploring.”
Sunday Tribune sources, however revealed that one of the pastors who told Amaechi he would still be governor is Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
It was gathered that in the thick of the governorship impasse in Rivers State, Amaechi became afraid that his life was under threat and he needed spiritual protection, hence he went to see a prominent Redeemed Church pastor in Port Harcourt who linked Amaechi with Pastor Adeboye in Lagos who subsequently prayed for him and told him that he would be named governor of his state afterall.
Shedding light on the state of his relationship with his cousin, the former governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia, who he took over from in a dramatic manner, Governor Amaechi informed that there exists a cordial relationship between.
“I have met with my cousin after I was sworn in as Rivers State governor. I have spoken with him that my agitation was not against him but against injustice that was meted to me which I wanted redressed. He seems to understand with me. In any case, our family is lucky to have produced two governors.
“It is on record that Omehia was once a governor of the state and he enjoys the privileges attached to that status. Even if I am removed today, nothing can change the fact that I have been a governor of the state.”
